Workspace PDF export

A knowledge workspace can be exported as PDF in three shapes. All three entry points (CLI, Desktop, MCP) use the same code path: the diagrams are rendered by the full render pipeline, then laid out by the script-free kuml-workspace-pdf module.

Exporting runs the Kotlin script of every ` `kuml ``` block, exactly like kuml workspace render. Only export workspaces you trust. Desktop and MCP refuse untrusted workspaces.

The three kinds

Handbook (--kind handbook, default)

One book: cover page, table of contents, the chapters in the reading order given by the links of the workspace’s index.md, then Traceability (only when requirement diagrams carry satisfy/verify/derive links), Open items, the glossary and an appendix Further documents with every document that index.md does not link, sorted by path. Each diagram is followed by an element table (kind, name, detail) extracted from its model.

Per document (--kind per-document)

One PDF per Markdown document. No cover page unless --cover; a table of contents only for documents with at least two headings.

Diagram folio (--kind diagrams)

Every diagram on its own page with its title above and its source (path:line) below. With --split, one PDF per diagram. No cover, no table of contents.

CLI

kuml workspace export <dir> --format pdf
    [--kind handbook|per-document|diagrams] [--scope all|folder:<path>|<document>]...
    [--page a4|a3] [--orientation portrait|landscape|auto]
    [--cover|--no-cover] [--no-toc] [--no-header-footer] [--draft]
    [--author <text>] [--version <text>] [--date YYYY-MM-DD] [--lang de|en] [--theme <name>]
    [-o <file-or-dir>] [--force] [--strict] [--split]

The default output is <root>/.kuml-out/export/<workspace>.pdf (handbook, folio) or <root>/.kuml-out/export/pdf/ (per document, --split). The CLI may write outside the workspace root with -o, like kuml render -o. An existing file is only replaced with --force.

Warnings and diagram failures are printed to stderr. A diagram that must be scaled below 40 % produces WARN scale 28% … suggestion: A3 landscape. A failed diagram becomes a placeholder box in the PDF (OKF-E-007). With --strict, any warning or failed diagram ends the command with exit code 3 before anything is written.

Table 1. Exit codes

0

Success (possibly with warnings)

2

Usage error: bad option, unknown or escaping scope, existing output without --force, a limit exceeded

3

--strict violation or export timeout

4

I/O error while writing

--ai-notes is reserved: the library supports an optional "AI draft" box under each diagram, but no AI provider is wired into the CLI yet, so the option is refused with exit code 2 rather than silently ignored.

Frontmatter of index.md

The cover page and the footer read title, subtitle, author, version, date (ISO-8601), status, logo (a PNG or JPEG inside the workspace, at most 2 MB and 4000 px) and lang (de or en). Command-line options override them. Without lang, labels follow the system language (German, otherwise English).

Layout rules

  • A4 (default) or A3, portrait; with auto orientation a diagram gets a landscape page only when that gains at least 15 percentage points of scale. A3 is never chosen automatically.

  • A diagram is never enlarged beyond 100 % and never cut off.

  • Text is real, embedded text (Inter and JetBrains Mono subsets); diagram text becomes outlines, so diagrams look the same everywhere.

  • Bookmarks follow the headings (levels 1 to 3); table of contents entries, cross-document links and the open-items line on the cover are clickable. Only http, https and mailto links become external links.

  • Images are embedded only from inside the workspace (PNG or JPEG, at most 10 MB and 8000 x 8000 px); remote images become their alt text.

  • --draft adds a diagonal watermark.

Open items

The Open items chapter collects: unchecked tasks (- [ ]), TODO:, FIXME:, OFFEN: and OPEN: markers outside code, [!todo] and [!question] callouts, documents whose frontmatter status is open, offen, draft or entwurf, and model notes that start with TODO, OFFEN or OPEN.

Limits

2000 pages, 500 documents, 300 diagrams, 200 MB output, 20 MB per SVG, 5 MB per Markdown document, 60 s per diagram and 15 minutes in total. A diagram timeout cannot forcibly stop an in-process script; the export moves on and the thread may finish later.

kUML Desktop

File ▸ Export Workspace ▸ As PDF… opens a dialog with three presets, folded-away advanced options, and options that do not apply shown disabled with the reason. Check and export renders first (with progress, cancellable); a too-small diagram offers Use A3 landscape or Export anyway before the save dialog opens. The menu entry is disabled for engineering workspaces, which have no document tree to export. While rendering, the dialog holds the same evaluation slot as the MCP tools.

MCP tool

kuml_desktop_workspace_export_pdf exports the open, trusted knowledge workspace. Output stays below the workspace root (default .kuml-out/export/); an existing file needs overwrite:true. It returns {ok, output, files, pageCount, documentCount, diagramCount, warnings, failed} and never file contents. It holds the shared evaluation slot for up to 15 minutes, so other evaluating tools may answer BUSY meanwhile. Errors: INVALID_PATH, OUTPUT_EXISTS, OUTPUT_INVALID, EMPTY_SCOPE, TOO_MANY_DOCUMENTS, TOO_MANY_DIAGRAMS, PAGE_LIMIT, OUTPUT_TOO_LARGE, SCALE_TOO_SMALL (with strict), EXPORT_TIMEOUT, BUSY, WORKSPACE_NOT_TRUSTED, WORKSPACE_MODE_UNSUPPORTED.

Known limits

  • Diagram text is converted to outlines and is therefore not searchable; body text is.

  • The PDF is not PDF/A.

  • The traceability chapter needs SysML 2 requirement diagrams; without them it is omitted (and the CLI prints a note).

  • The GraalVM native CLI image is not supported for this command (AWT and PDFBox).
